It is commonly thought that humanities, which generally includes academic disciplines such as language, literature, geography, history, religion, philosophy and the arts, is not relevant to contemporary life and does not contribute to the progress of nations. It is usually negatively compared to STEM -- science, technology, engineering and mathematics -- which is highly viewed.
